As a little girl, Shyla was loving and full of care for others. But as she grew, life became much harder. By age 16, she had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. What followed were years of hospital stays, medication changes, and endless cycles of doctors and placements that never seemed to meet her needs.
Her mother, a hardworking woman raising four children, tried everything. “I was on the phone six hours at a time, searching for help,” she recalls. “But doors kept closing. Programs would take her in, then put her out. No one seemed willing to meet her where she was.”
That changed when she found CenterPointe.
“At first, I didn’t even know CenterPointe existed,” she said. “But when I finally connected, it was like the Lord put angels in our path. CenterPointe didn’t give up on my daughter. They saw her heart. They worked with her, step by step, to build discipline, routine, and self-responsibility.”
For the first time in years, Shyla began to thrive. She attended groups, kept her space clean, and even started doing her own laundry. Small steps, but huge for her independence. “She’s stronger now,” her mother says. “She’s more in tune with life. She’s not 100%, but she’s come so far- and that’s progress we never had before.”
The impact wasn’t just on Shyla. It was on the whole family. “CenterPointe worked with me as a partner,” her mother explains. “If she got off track, they called me. We put our heads together as a team. That gave me relief, knowing I wasn’t alone in this anymore.”
To other parents struggling with hopelessness, she offers encouragement: “Don’t give up. There is help. CenterPointe is a place where your loved one will be safe, cared for, and given the chance to grow. I only wish I had known about them sooner.”
And to those considering supporting CenterPointe, she says: “Your donations matter. Mental illness is real, and people are crying out for help. At CenterPointe, you see results. They don’t just talk about change—they make it happen. They met my daughter where she was, and because of that, she’s living a healthier, fuller life.”
For Shyla and her family, CenterPointe has truly been life-changing. “It was a blessed journey,” her mother reflects. “And I will keep spreading the news about CenterPointe, because they were the center of our lives when we needed it most.”
